How to Use Wax Melts: A Beginner's Guide

What Are Wax Melts?

Wax melts are small, scented pieces of wax designed to be gently heated in a wax warmer or burner. Unlike candles, they don't have a wick — instead, the heat releases the fragrance without burning the wax away. This means you get a longer-lasting, more intense scent throw, and you're in complete control of how strong your home smells.

What You'll Need

  • A wax warmer or burner — electric warmers offer consistent heat and are safer around children and pets; tea light burners give a cosy, flickering ambience.
  • Wax melts — one or two segments is usually enough to fill a room.
  • A tea light candle (if using a traditional burner).

Step-by-Step: How to Use Wax Melts

  1. Choose your scent. Pick a wax melt that suits your mood or the room. Lighter, fresh scents like our Lime After Lime (inspired by Jo Malone's Lime, Basil & Mandarin) work beautifully in kitchens and bathrooms, while warmer, richer scents like Midsummer Noir (a Yankee Midsummer's Night dupe) are perfect for living rooms and bedrooms.
  2. Break off a segment. Most wax melts come in a clamshell or snap bar. Break off one or two segments — you don't need the whole bar at once.
  3. Place it in the dish. Pop the wax segment into the top dish of your warmer or burner.
  4. Apply heat. Switch on your electric warmer, or light a tea light underneath a traditional burner. The wax will begin to melt within a few minutes and release its fragrance.
  5. Enjoy. Fragrance will fill the room within 5–10 minutes. Most melts will scent a room for 6–12 hours of use.

How Long Do Wax Melts Last?

A single segment typically lasts 6–12 hours of burn time, depending on the quality of the fragrance oil used. At JoViCo, we use high-quality fragrance oils to ensure a strong, true-to-scent throw from the first melt to the last.

You'll know it's time to change your wax when you can no longer smell the fragrance — the wax itself won't disappear, it just loses its scent over time.

How to Change Your Wax Melt

Once the scent has faded, it's time to swap it out. Here's the easiest way:

  • Cotton ball method: While the wax is still liquid (warmer still on), place a cotton ball or cotton pad into the dish. It will absorb the liquid wax. Discard and wipe the dish clean.
  • Freeze method: Turn off the warmer and let the wax cool completely. Pop the dish in the freezer for 10 minutes — the wax will contract and pop out cleanly.

Tips for Getting the Most from Your Wax Melts

  • Start with one segment and add more if you want a stronger scent.
  • Keep your warmer dish clean between scents for the truest fragrance.
  • Don't mix too many different scents at once — two complementary scents can work beautifully, but more can become overwhelming.
  • Store unused wax melts in a cool, dark place to preserve the fragrance.
  • Try layering scents — for example, our Cashmere Kiss (eucalyptus, magnolia, cashmere and musk) pairs wonderfully with White Paradise for a spa-like atmosphere.
